“What the heck’s an ANIME,” I asked (apparently foolishly) when Michael was describing what was to be his next shoot. Mr. Ninn patiently explained that it’s basically sophisticated Japanese animation, often of an “adult” nature. By the time he finished talking about it I was grateful that my friend had left unsaid the conclusion that I must have been living under a rock for the past 15 years.

I actually got to visit the set a couple of the days while Ninn Worx was shooting Pussy Kat, but even after that experience I wasn’t prepared for the visual feast that Katsumi and her friends bring to the screen in this show. Actually it’s not all that unusual to fail to completely grasp exactly what’s happening on a Michael Ninn set, since so much of the “magic” happens in his darkened edit bays long after the performers have forgotten they even did the work. When I ran into Katsumi and Mia Smiles some months later, though, they were still buzzing about being a (literal) canvas for Michael. Once again this show lives up to its billing as a feast for the eyes. But make no mistake here: This is NOT a cartoon. This is the unparalleled Ninn using the cartoons as a vehicle to show off real live people — and show them off he certainly does.

So if this is your cup o’ tea, you’re going to be full before you get to the end of this show. It’s really too bad that we can’t post any stills from this show in this public place, but we’ll see if we can get Michael to put something together for the “free side” of the web.
